What are Green House residences?

| An example of a Green House residence |
The Green House model is a concept taking hold across our nation as traditional nursing home facilities are replaced with small, home-like environments housing an average of ten elders. The homes feature patios and gardens, private rooms and bathrooms, an open kitchen and dining room. According to NCB Capital and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which supports the development of Green Houses, "The Green House model creates a small intentional community for a group of elders and staff. It is a place that focuses on life, and its heart is found in the relationships that flourish there." There are 69 Green House residence projects in the United States. Loretto's project, which will be located in Cicero in northern Onondaga County, is one of four Green House residence projects in New York State.
