Renovations to the Cunningham Skilled Nursing Building and the Philosophy Behind it

A Word About The "Eden Alternative"
Before the concept of Green House residences was developed, The "Eden Alternative" was implemented in many nursing homes. The "Eden Alternative" was created in 1991 by Dr. William Thomas and is dedicated to "transforming environments into habitats for human beings that promote quality of life for all involved."(Eden Alternative®) The principles and values of the "Eden Alternative" are fundamental to Green House residences and person-centered care. Who it affects:
The 13th floor Cunningham skilled nursing building of Loretto's Health and Rehabilitation Center, recently used as office space, will be renovated to create "neighborhoods" for elders. Employees currently working on 13 will be relocated. The finance department will be moving off the Brighton Ave. campus just down the street to 461 East Brighton Ave. Social workers will move to their respective floors, and therapeutic recreation will be located on the first floor of Fahey Rehab.

The nature of the renovations:
The 13th floor will feature a home-like atmosphere, private bedrooms and bathrooms, more open space, a cafe, and greater activity space. The design is intended to reduce the feelings of loneliness, helplessness and boredom elders often face.

Eden Alternative training at Loretto:
Similar to the Green House residences, the approach is person-centered and is intended to free residents from defined routines and build relationships. Direct care workers on the 13th floor will hold CNA certifications and receive additional training in the principles of "The Eden Alternative", the philosophical base of person-centered care.
